ABOUT UAG
The International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) University Alliance Group (UAG) is a collaborative working group consisting of university personnel and federal and non-profit partners interested in developing energy-efficient and environmentally-sustainable laboratories in the academic research sector. For several years the UAG, in collaboration with federal colleagues, has been raising awareness about the need for advancing sustainability in research and increasing the effective use of sponsor support of academic research by incorporating requests for efficiency in the grant funding process.
Opportunities for efficiency include establishing shared equipment assets, improving lab space and fume hood utilization, and implementing best practices that minimize energy use, water use, and generation of solid and hazardous waste. Ignoring these opportunities results in greater costs to the institution and less money available in sponsor budgets to support the direct costs of research. Inefficiencies also contribute to a larger environmental and social footprint than is necessary to safely conduct research.
